I’ve been on a Kickstarter run lately, and I’ve been fascinated at how many great projects there are out there.
So, in order to get a few of them some more exposure, and to help you spend more of your hard earned money on games, I’m to be compiling lists of projects that I find interesting, and worth funding.
I myself may not fund all the projects I discover, but this article series will focus on the ones that have piqued my interest, and might find an audience with some of our readership.
By clicking on the title of the game, it will open a link to the Kickstarter project page.
Cthulhu Wars
The wildly popular Lovecraftian Mythos comes to board gaming. And man does it come blazing in with style. The models can easily be ported to other games, and thus they can fill a lot of uses for the eclectic gamer.
The game play is much like Chaos in the Old World, only with a (in my opinion anyways) better mythos. Awesome miniatures, really good game play. So, what’s not to like, right?
The price. In order to get all the stretch goal freebies, you’re looking to spend $200+. This game will be sporting a $170 price tag at retail.
Granted, most Kickstarters will eat up this much of your cash with add-ons and such. The initial buy-in being that high is a bit of a turn off for myself. Plus, there’s expansion add-ons (13 to be exact!!) One could easily spend more than $500 on this campaign if you were so inclined.
But, what does my opinion matter when they’re past $500k and three weeks to go? Sandy Peterson is obviously doing something right here.
Escape – A Boardgame in the Eden Universe
This is an official boxed version of the wildly successful game originally printed in Ravage magazine. It’s by the folks who brought you EDEN, so you know the miniatures will be stellar. I’ve seen a few of the prototypes, and they’re right on par with the rest of the EDEN line.
Each player has a team of fighters trying to complete their objectives before the other team does the same.
There’s just over three weeks left in the campaign, and they’re 150% funded. So, it’s all stretch rewards from here, and with a sweet spot of $100, it’s an easy shoe in for those looking for a quick tactical skirmish board game.
Warriors of Darkmyre – Obliteration Edition
Ok, so this game just looks awesome. It’s a complete boxed game, and your pledge is completely customizable. This allows you to choose what material your models are made from (who does this??!), and which models you want.
It’s an arena style battle game, and players may fight with a single model, or up to 16. All characters are built from scratch using base line stats/races/classes, and ‘level up’ from battle to battle.
The price point is fair, falling in at the $100 ‘sweet spot’ mark, and the campaign features tons of upgrades, add-ons, and free goodies. Even if you don’t want the game, these miniatures look ready for some talented painter to make them beautiful (please send all models you do not want to me…..).
It’s 200% funded with just over a week left in the campaign; it’s all stretch goals from here on in.
Wargods of Olympus
Are you looking for a mass battle game that isn’t made by Mantic or Games Workshop? Then look no further my miniature gaming friends.
Chris Fitzpatrick is one of my favorite old school sculptors from GW, and all of the Wargods line of miniatures paint up beautifully. They’re also pretty easy to paint; not crammed with detail, but not lacking it either. These miniatures strike a nice medium between detail and minimalism that just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Seriously. They also leave enough room for you fancy-pants painters that like to show off with freehand designs.
The pledge level ‘sweet spot’ for this Kickstarter is a bit on the high side, but not for a miniatures game. The buy-in is an average of $160 with a lot of different options. The most ‘bang-for-your-buck’ option gets you the rulebook, and 28 miniatures.
They have more than doubled their goal with just over two weeks left in the campaign. There’s still quite a bit to be unlocked yet, and plenty of time to do it in.
If you like Greek mythology, and want a good mass battle game, then this is it (if I had more disposable income I’d be all over this project).
